Optic nerve damage from glaucoma - What is the optic nerve?

The optic nerve should be a concern after the symptoms of glaucoma is detected, the nerve fibers that control the vision that can be easily damaged due to intraocular pressure due to the disease of glaucoma. The optical disc can be cut off the blood supply of the eye tissue resulting in a color to transform a pure white, as opposed to the normal pink or red.

Less than a border around the eye can see an ophthalmologist, was caused more damage to his optic nerve. To examine whether the damage to the optic nerve is present, a doctor tends to dilute the student researcher in the optic nerve in his eye carefully using a slit lamp.

What is the optic nerve?

The optic nerve is essentially a series of nerve fibers that transmit messages between the brain and retina, using the nerve fibers that are commonly called axons.

There are a number of procedures that can be used in the treatment of glaucoma, including polarimetry and ultrasound biomicroscopy. Polarimetry is a nerve fiber analyzer using a laser on a computer to measure the thickness of layers of nerve fibers. The light as it strikes the eye defraction and the amount of change that takes place to determine the thickness of the nerve tissue.

Glaucoma damage is manifested by a very thin layer of nerve fibers, which shows the optical loss of cells. The proof of polarimetry glaucoma is quite easy to do and only takes seconds.

Ultrasound biomicroscopy using a small tool to study the angle of the cornea and iris, which is particularly useful in the diagnosis of angle-closure glaucoma.

Flowmeter test can also be used to determine the flow rate of blood flowing through the optic nerve, in order to estimate the amount of glaucoma damage. This image can be studied on a color monitor in the test itself only takes a few seconds.

Electrophysiology is another technique used to study the damage of the optic nerve and uses electronic signals and responses to light to measure the degree to glaucoma that had taken place. People with glaucoma in the eye, you will have less of a response to an electrical pulse than those with healthy eyes.

Studies of the optic nerve is important to stop the deterioration of nerve fibers that can choke out the vision.
